The Marathon

The AIMS/IAAF-certified, and World Athletics sanctioned event, 42.195K Royal Victoria Marathon takes place annually on the Sunday of the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday weekend and is accompanied by a half-marathon, 8K, 5K, and Thrifty Foods Kid's Run. The 5K takes place on Saturday and is not part of the high-performance program (but is run on a fast and certified accurate course).

The 44th annual Royal Victoria Marathon offers a beautiful, seaside course with mild to moderate elevation changes along the way.

BC Athletics Marathon Championships

The 2024 Royal Victoria Marathon is the provincial BC Athletics Marathon Championships and is an event within the BC Super Series.

The BC Super Series is a collaboration between BC Athletics and 12 of the province's best road races. The series attempts to bring in competitive athletes from across the province.

The 12 races were selected based on the quality of the events and the competitiveness of their fields. They include the BC Championship races over 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon distances.

Canadian (CMA) Half Marathon Masters Championships

The half-marathon course is considered fast. It will start at the same time as the marathon beside the stately Parliament Buildings and winds its way through downtown and offers a quick, rolling course with long sections of downhill and flat as well as mild uphill sections. The course is certified accurate by a World Athletics-certified B-level measurer.

8K Event

The 8K is run on an out-and-back route where the gradual up after 2K allows for a very fast second half — also on a certified course.

Transgender and Gender Diversity Inclusion

The Royal Victoria Marathon follows the Athletics Canada Policy on Transgender and Gender Diversity Inclusion. CLICK HERE for the policy.

The High-Performance Athlete Program

The High-Performance Athlete Program allows the Royal Victoria Marathon to offer top Canadian and international marathon, half-marathon, and 8K runners an environment in which they can succeed. The goal of the program is to create an excellent event and to foster the development of Canadian runners and is designed to attract competitive distance athletes.

High-Performance Program prizes are awarded to the top male and female, open and masters, marathon and half-marathon athletes, as well as an incentive for breaking the course record. Some elite athletes will be given the opportunity to share their unique stories with the local media.

The registered, not-for-profit Victoria Marathon Society administers the annual Royal Victoria Marathon and associated events.

Over $18,000 in prize money is awarded. See below for the prize purse breakdown.

Please contact elites@runvictoriamarathon.com if you have any questions.

The 2024 Prize structure will remain the same as 2023.
