The Times Colonist Raise a Reader program is a year-round initiative that raises funds for family literacy programs on Vancouver Island. Our commitment is to support programs that work to educate Canadians about literacy issues and how improved literacy levels have a positive impact on our country’s economic and social well being. 100% of the money collected stays on Vancouver Island and funds are distributed to local literacy programs. Over 140 schools and organizations received funding last year with money raised from each of our Raise a Reader campaigns, including our Annual Book Drive and Sale, enabling them to purchase books and other valuable learning tools. This year’s Book Drop is taking place on April 28 and 29, with the Sale taking place on May 12 and 13 --- both at the Victoria Curling Club on Quadra Street in Victoria. Today one in every 90 children in Canada is diagnosed with autism. Autistic children often exist in a world of isolation, unable to relate to the people around them or enjoy the routines we all take for granted for our children-going to school, playing with friends, telling their parents they love them. But there is hope! The Kilee Patchell-Evans Autism Research Group, under the direction of Dr. Derrick MacFabe was founded in 2003 with funding provided by David Patchell-Evans. Now that commitment has grown to a personal donation of over $4 million. The team continues to unfold important new findings that are receiving global attention. Recognized by the Canadian Medical Association in 2007 with its Medal of Honour, David Patchell-Evans and Dr. MacFabe continue to build collaborations between scientists and concerned citizens around the world. Please contact me (Cathy Noel) directly if you have questions about the program or would like some advice on which charity to choose.
If you represent a charity and would like to join the CPP, the selection criteria and application will be on the website in November, 2012 with a deadline of November 30, 2012 for submissions.
In 2005, the Charity Pledge Program was launched with 5 charities and in 2011 we had 22 charities participating.
