Who We Are

The Victoria Marathon Society is a non-profit organization that was incorporated in 1982. We have a Board of Directors
(7 members), and a Race Committee (over 45 members) who oversee event weekend operations. We have two full-time employees and 1100+ volunteers who help make our event happen. The GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon is AIMS and Run Canada Certified. We are sanctioned by BC Athletics.

Our Mission

The mission of the Victoria Marathon Society is threefold:

  • To present a well organized, community-based running event including four races specifically a Marathon (42.2 km), a Half Marathon (21.1 km), and a 8 kilometre Road Race for adults, and a 1.2 km Kids Run for the residents of Greater Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, North America, and other parts of the world.
  • To attract numerous off-island, in-province, out-of-province and world-wide visitors to participate in these events while vacationing in Victoria enhancing the economy of our city.
  • To ensure that all individuals achieve their goals in a quality fitness event while being provided with a healthy and safe atmosphere.

Goals

The key goals of the Victoria Marathon Society are:

  • To develop a 3 day festive atmosphere for every level of participation.
  • To develop an awareness for a healthy lifestyle.
  • To provide an event at which club, corporate, husband/wife and junior teams can enjoy the activities.
  • To make Victoria a destination marathon and attract increased participation from the community and participants from Canada, the United States and other parts of the world.
  • To raise the profile of the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon in comparison to all other marathons in the world administered by the Association of International Marathon Society (AIMS).
  • To raise funds for KidSport, Raise-a-Reader, Runners of Compassion and other health-smart initiatives.
  • To provide equipment and supplies for Greater Victoria Running Clubs.

TESTIMONIALS

Thank you so much for a fantastic weekend. Mark, the kids and I enjoyed our stay at the Fairmont Empress immensely as well as all of the other perks you kindly arranged for us. I’m absolutely ecstatic about the race, and am definitely gunning for 2:45 now! The course is awesome; I love the constant undulation, the many spectators along the way, and especially getting to see the other runners so often. Thanks again and I will see you next year!

2005, 2006 and 2007 Royal Victoria Marathon Women’s Champion

I wanted to thank you for last weekend. The biggest part of my success in the race was the help I got from my support group. I appreciate that you let them be as much a part of the race as you did. It was really important to have my coach there. Also, I would not be here today if I had not gotten the motivation and help over the years for you as Elite Athlete Director. I was not sure if Victoria was going to be a good place to take a shot at a decent marathon time and I couldn’t have achieved my result without the crowd support all along the course. They were great. I will never forget this run!

On Saturday, the day before the race, part of my mental preparation included coming down the final road knowing I had a run a good time and competed well against some good runners. I imagined seeing a friend of mine and giving him a high five. I’m glad this was able to happen on Sunday, especially after last year when I had a difficult marathon and was almost choked up when I saw him. I usually don’t show emotion when I’m finishing, since I just want to cross the finish line and stop, but I was looking forward to my opportunity on Sunday to have a solid half marathon and was overwhelmed when I crossed the line.

I want to tell your whole crew what a great event you have on your hands! The entire weekend was great! It is quite evident that you spent a lot of time planning out every little piece!
