What the Royal Victoria Marathon is doing to be more Green-Friendly

  • Reduces the amount of paper used in advertising and promotion by sending updates and notices by email.
  • Encourages online registration and has discontinued faxed registrations.
  • Recycles discarded clothing by donating to a charity after the event.
  • Level GroundReduces the amount of waste by composting food products from race refuse. "We're eager to decrease the landfill waste generated at RVM this year. One way of doing this is in partnership with our coffee sponsor, Level Ground Trading, who have a commitment to Zero Landfill Waste. All of Level Ground Trading's cups, stir sticks and napkins are to be composted. Wherever there are choices (landfill / compost) at the RVM this year there will be separate receptacles for each."
  • Lowers the number of vehicles on the road by utilizing lead cyclists and paramedics on bicycles.
  • Uses 100% bio-degradable bags for race packages.
  • Chose recyclable race numbers for the kids run over plastic ID bands.
  • Greener Garbage - Cardboard from race refuse is recycled.
  • Used reusable containers for race beverage distribution at aid stations and at the finish line.
  • Portapotties along the route use environmentally-friendly hand-sanitizer solution and toilet paper made with recycled content.
  • Reducing amount of paper used for printed newspaper results.
